The Steps Required For Obtaining Eligibility For Teacher Certification

There is a standard minimum requirement for all US educators, however - all must have at least a bachelor's degree. What this degree is in, and whether it is the only educational requirement, varies. Some states require this degree to be in education, and other states don't allow the use of degrees in education.

Post-baccalaureate study is sometimes required. In California, completion of a one-year, post-baccalaureate teaching certification program is required. This is often combined with a masters in education, which usually only adds another year to the credential program. However, it is not required.

Testing is fairly universal for aspiring teachers, too. The requirements vary from state to state, and may include the Praxis tests, their own state tests, or some mix of both. Praxis exams are available to test both a teacher's knowledge of teaching methods and specific subjects. When non-state tests are used, the state still determines which ones must be completed and what constitutes a passing score.

A background check is a requirement for all educators trying to get a teaching certification. This ensures that nobody with a dangerous past is allowed to teach the nation's children. Usually this involves submitting a fingerprint card taken by a local law enforcement agency to the state, and waiting for the results to be passed on to the education department.

Reciprocity makes it possible for established teachers in one state to move to another state and get a job. However, it's harder for students who do not yet have a teacher certification. Completion of the requirements for licensing in one state is often seen as equivalent to another state's requirements, but if they are not all completed, a student may have to meet all of the new state's requirements.
