Peace and quiet are required elements for learning. This, along with other
study tips, will help make sure that students can learn effectively. Sometimes, study skills are not naturally learned or acquired, and students need some assistance. This is where some tips come in.
To learn effectively, quietness and a lack of distractions are necessary. Often, this cannot be found at the average student's home or dorm room. In this case, the best place to go is the college library. Many of these libraries are open a lot of hours per day in order to facilitate studying for students whose home environments are loud.
Even in the library, some students are too easily distracted to work well. If you are one of them, try to choose a corner or face the wall. If other students are being noisy in the areas designated as quiet zones, tell the librarians. There are lots of places to talk, but only a few where you can reasonably expect silence.
Some students find it difficult to actually get to studying. They always mean to, but when it comes time to pick up their books, they put it off. Studying can be put off indefinitely this way, and that can result in poor grades. People who have trouble with this may benefit from making an appointment with themselves-- a time each day that they spend studying.
Switch between subjects regularly if possible. This keeps the brain fresh and absorbing ideas, which might not be the case if you stare at your English homework for too long. If there is a big paper or assignment due soon in one class, this may not be possible, which makes taking breaks all the more important. Get up and walk around, stretch, go to the bathroom.
Mastering effective study skills takes time, and dedication. But no matter how many
study tips students find on learning and retaining material from books and lectures, none of them are likely to be effective without basic study tips such as finding peace and quiet and minimizing distractions.
