For kindergarten and preschool students, activities they can take home or let people see in the classroom are the best ones. A project that they always love is making play dough.

Here is a recipe that does not need cooking. Mix up 1 cup salt, 3 cups flour, and 3 tablespoon cornstarch. Then put in 1 cup water and 1 TBSP canola or vegetable oil. Knead the dough together until the lumps are gone.

It can be kept pliable in a sealed baggie or plastic covered container. Double the recipe if you need more. Now for the fun part. Divide the dough into at least six parts.

Add blue food color in one, food coloring that is red in another and yellow in a another part Then have the students combine equal quantities of red and blue to make purple, red and yellow to make orange. They can also make green combining blue and yellow.

They will learn about primary and secondary colors and enjoy doing it. As an added learning experience, have the children make basic shapes from the play dough. They can learn to recognize squares, circles, triangles, cylinders and pyramids.

Growing herbs from seeds is also a fun, positive and rewarding science fair experience for young students. All that is required is some good planting soil, small planting pots, and of course seeds.

If you decide to grow vegetable plants, you can bring in fresh turnip, radishes, and carrots for the youngsters to taste and see as they make their choices for which to plant. All of these vegetables go through a short germination period so they will sprout in a couple of weeks.

To do your science fair project with flower seeds, use alyssum, cornflower, or zinnia because they all have 7 day germination periods. You can let the kids grow herbs such as catnip, basil, or spearmint and they will usually sprout quickly too. You can try other kinds of seeds , but this list is of plants that will not make kids wait too long to see results.

Great science fair ideas are also available on the web. Science fair ideas have to be fun for kids to become involved so choose projects that will give students something to keep, be proud of, and display.
