With regards to learning a language, it can be tough to obtain to a fluent level. You will find all types of variables at play that make this undertaking a troublesome challenge specially when almost everyone wants to be talking in next to no time at all. In relation to learning Japanese there are numerous issues to take into account. The next few paragraphs will discuss what is challenging about learning the Japanese language.

On a general level, studying a second language is always going to be tough for 2 reasons.

The first is that you are already fluent in one language - your mother tongue. Therefore this is a crutch that you will constantly lean on whenever you get into difficulty or frustration at learning Japanese.

The second reason is that you will be more likely to learn Japanese in a very different way to how you learned your mother tongue thus you don't have any 'experience' at learning languages as such. Learning your native language was a essentially unconscious task.

Learning the Japanese language will be an extremely conscious act where you've got to understand how the language works before you will be able to speak it. This is certainly the difficult or frustrating part of learning that is in front of you depending on the educational method you select.

The immersion method is a replication of how you learn your native tongue nevertheless it is not always a practical choice for many people and can be quite an daunting method for a few people.

Doing a standard 'course' - such as written text, audio and video resources can be described as a more conventional way to master a new language however it works on the idea of telling you how the language works and then teaching you how to talk. This can take time and can be frustrating or just confusing if you have no aptitude for the dynamics of language.

On a more specific level, Japanese is difficult for English speakers for quite a few reasons. Two of the most obvious are the radical difference of the letters or alphabet and the grammar.

The Japanese language uses 3 scripts to denote letters, words and writing. They are kanji, hiragana, and katakana. There's also rōmaji that uses the Latin alphabet and is intended to be more western friendly. In essence studying the Japanese letters or symbols in kanji, hiragana, and katakana will put years on your study. You almost certainly want to learn to talk before you can write in these symbols.

Also Japanese grammar is quite different from English. For example there are no definite articles after nouns. The word order is different. For example the subject noun comes after the verb in Japanese whereas it comes before in English. This is not a big deal as French and Spanish have a similar word order difference but there are other nuances to Japanese grammar that could make it difficult to learn.

With this said, it is on no account impossible to learn Japanese to a great level and become fluent, provided you put the time in and use a good learn Japanese system.
