Frustrated parents around the world are begging their kids each night to eat their vegetables. The kids get frustrated with their parents because they don't want to try them, and then everyone leaves the dinner table upset. However, meal time doesn't have to turn into a battle of wills. There are things you can do to help your kids eat their vegetables, without nagging and without complaint. Eventually, you'll have kids growing up to be vegetable lovers, and they'll thank their parents for their healthy lives. We have a few tips that will help you in your quest to feed your kids better.

The first step is to give you children choices between two good things. Rather than having them choose between green beans and macaroni and cheese, you let them choose green beans or broccoli. Giving this power back to the kids within your parameters helps them to feel independent, while still picking vegetables. Also, let them help you decide how to prepare the veggies. Some kids like them raw, some like them cooked. It's OK either way, so don't get so hung up on this aspect.

Next, let them start a garden. Growing your own tomatoes, and then making tomato soup, or growing their own carrots to add to casseroles can be enough to get kids excited about their harvest. Gardens can be relatively easy to start, and seeds are quite inexpensive.

Third, head to the grocery store or farmers market and find some new vegetables that your family hasn't tried before. Kids might enjoy being adventurous and preparing new foods. After finding something new, look online for different ways to prepare your new vegetables and try a few different ways until you find your favorite. Kids may not like new vegetables, but when they help pick out ones that are interesting or different, they may be more likely to try something.

Fourth, limit portions. A heaping plate of broccoli for me is overwhelming, and for children, even more so. Kids only need 1-3 cups of vegetables per day, so serve up a tiny amount, and help them to see it's not that much to eat.

Fifth, put your vegetables in familiar food. Adding vegetables to spaghetti sauce, lasagna, or even tacos give kids a chance to try the vegetables, while being comfortable with the food at the same time.

The important lessons you teach your kids about healthy eating will last them a lifetime. If they are introduced to new foods at a young age, they will likely enjoy their vegetables for years to come.
