It can be quite a task to go through the stages of buying the right type of childrens bedroom furniture. The term stages meaning from infancy through the school age child. It can be daunting to find the right furniture considering safety, price, and aesthetics. The importance of each of these varies from parent to child.

Most infants require either a bassinet or a crib. Nurseries may also consist of a changing table and other furniture to accessorize. The most popular choice for a baby's slumber is a crib and it is important to keep in mind the safety of the crib being purchased. One would think that a manufacturer would only provide safe products but this cannot be assumed. It is up to the parents to ensure that they are protecting the well-being of the child.

When choosing a crib it is imperative to make sure that the slats are close enough together so that the infants head cannot get stuck, and subsequently injured. The slats should be no more than 2 3/8 inches apart. It is also important to ensure that the mattress fits tightly inside the crib to avoid any problems with the infant becoming stuck between the mattress and the crib itself.

Eventually, the infant grows into a toddler who is ready to make the move to a real bed. Remember that the toddler is used to the slats of the crib keeping them from falling out. There will need to be time made for the adjustment to a bed. A good way to do this is to install side rails to the bed, keeping them in place until the child is more aware of his or her surroundings.

As years go by, children, especially ones with siblings, love the idea of having a bunk bed. If a bunk bed is chosen, it is important to make sure that the one purchased has a strong side rail on the top bunk, as well as a sturdy ladder since young children can be tough on their furniture.

Another common piece of furniture in a child's bedroom is the dresser. As children mature they become more autonomous and want to do everything themselves, whether they can reach or not. They always seem to find a way. A child will want to find a way to get to his or her socks in the top drawer of her 4-drawer dresser by climbing it, causing it to fall. An easy way to prevent this kind of accident is to purchase a dresser that is two drawers high where the child can more easily reach.

It is very possible to create the bedroom of a child's dreams and keep within a healthy budget. Just don't forget to make safety the first consideration before making a purchase.
