Preventing Sibling Rivalry Among Kids

As children are growing and learning more about themselves, what they want, how they want it and how they go about getting it they are bound to test the waters in many different ways. This can often lead to fighting between siblings. These fights can become stressful very quickly, not only for the children but for you and the rest of your family. There are a few ways to help reduce this stress when the fighting becomes too much.

There are a few ways to help reduce this stress when the fighting becomes too much.

As odd as it may sound, a good tip is to not get involved right away; children need to learn to fight their own battles. Of course, if it reached an uncomfortable level of screaming, always cut it off before the children have time to come to blows, but give them time to try to work it out.

This will help them better understand who they are as a person, as well as teach them self control and how to listen to the "other side of the story". It is imperative that your children learn to listen to each other and develop trust and respect for each other. If you get involved and choose sides, or fix every problem before it arises, your children will not have the opportunity to learn these things.

Try to do more things as a family, you may find that your kids are arguing so much because they have too much down time unattended. If they have an opportunity to work together and spend time together in a structured family activity, they will be less likely to fight in the first place.

Fighting is difficult to hear, take a step back and let them figure it out for themselves. In the end they will learn how to begin, handle and end a fight without it having such an impact on the rest of the family.
