A child who is read to has been shown to reach other development milestones in writing and reading sooner than children who are not introduced to reading at a young age. Fairy tales are a great way to start reading to your child as well as to teach them the fundamentals of reading.
Because of the imaginary tales behind this type of story, children learn to use their vast imagination and create new characters for the story or different scenarios for the heroes in the book. Most also enjoy having the ability to pretend they too are in the storyline.
Nearly all published stories have pictures as well to provide even more interest in the book itself. The child can follow along with the reading and look at the pictures to gain a better understanding of what is being read. This step is very important to the development of reading skills later in life.
Children will sometimes pretend to read to you or others. It is important that they be allowed to do this whether they really are actually reading the story or not. If they really are not reading the book, they are using their imagination to create a storyline to match the pictures. If they are reading the story chances are they have remembered what you have read to them in the past.
Make believe characters found in these stories provide plenty of material for the child to use their imagination. They like to pretend that they are in the story or better yet that the character is involved in their life somehow. The possibilities are endless.
For a developing brain, using all of the areas provide stimulation that allows for creativity and thought. As a result children can easily adapt to many more situations and be able to deal with change better than children who do not receive this type of stimulation.
