Anger management programs are not for everyone. They are only for those who are serious about changing the way they think and behave when angry.
The people who try to take control of their anger all by themselves are either not serious about changing, or they do not know how much a program can help them. There is a proverb that goes "he who teaches himself has a fool for a teacher." While this is not always true, it just might be the truth when you start to talk about learning to manage your anger.
Learning anger management as part of a program gives you 3 valuable advantages over doing it alone.
The first benefit is you get the advantage of having a competent person guiding you through the process of change. And you know making lasting change is not easy, this is what makes having a guide important.
Second you have the good fortune of having somebody to help motivate you and keep you going when the load starts to get heavy.
Motivation is important when you are trying to change the way you act. You will have to be constantly informed and re-informed about your reasons to change. Another person will help you stay focused better than you can yourself.
Third, if you do your anger management program yourself, how will you measure your progress? And how will you know if the progress you are making is good enough?
When trying to get their anger controlled, a lot of people to a therapist and an anger management group. That is fine, but it is also costly, and not your best course of action. It would be better for you to do an anger management class first. And if you still need to go to a therapist, you could go there second.
Doing this will save you money and give you more control and knowledge about the progress you are making.
You should do the class first so that if you still decide to use a therapist, your anger management program would be much further advanced. Because you had already the class, you will know a good bit more about how to calm anger than if you had gone directly to a therapist.
The result would be that you can speak with more intelligence to your therapist than if you had no knowledge of what was happening with you.
However, you could expect that with the right anger management class, you will not need a therapist at all. The class will teach you what you need to know in order to make sure that you are releasing all of the anger that comes your way.
Anger that is kept in and unexpressed is the anger that causes problems for people.
